Reminiscing 1

Am back in my hostel from the long weekend (due to Hair Raya falling on the weekend). Am sitting on my desk attempting to revise and do some homework, particularly, annoying maths and rather enjoyable chemistry. After 1 hour of futile attempt to even write a single line, my mind wandered off. Things that came to my mind, were memories of the my Army life, JC (Junior College) and Secondary school life.

10 years or a decade is how much time that have passed since i first stepped into Victoria Secondary. In the early days of its founding, it was a unisexual school for ladies and have gradually evolved to today's unisexual school for boys. Touted as one of the top ten secondary schools in Singapore, stress level was high. Particularly for an average boy like me at that point of time. It took me rather long to even be adjusted to the hectic school life. PE or physical education lessons were a chore, as i was never physically fit in anyway. I was even thrown into the anti-obesity program of the school, because of my overwhelming and ever-increasing waistline.

At that point of time, it was compulsory for all Secondary school students to be involved in some extra-curricular activities or E.C.A for short. Initially, i was deluded by thinking that i was actually good at swimming, so i went for a trial at the nearby swimming pool, only to realise that i was one of the last few that came in for the trials! Despite being invited to join the water polo team, i declined immediately and left promptly, feeling extremely embarrassed. hahaha..... Then, the next obvious choice for E.C.A, was Chinese Orchestra, because of my background in Chinese music accquired since primary school. It was also in the early secondary school days, where i met a group of friends, mostly from some Art elective programme that the school was promoting (i failed the trials.... hahaha....). Till this date, we are still very much in contact.

Upper secondary (year 3 and 4) were the days that are the most enjoyable for the whole of my secondary school life. It was then, where the Chinese Orchestra won its first SYF (Singapore Youth Festival Gold Medal, some prestigious local competition for the arts) in 25 years or more and till date, unless my memory fails me, the feat has not been repeated.... hahahaha..... Also, it was then, that i was exposed to various forms of Chinese performing arts, naming poetry recital, debating and cross talk. With cross talk being the only one me and 2 other friends manage to clinch a bronze medal, but BOY, were we proud, as we were the only pure Singaporean team. (the rest of the teams who won prizes had one or more Chinese Nationals). Also, in these 2 years, i had a great load of fun hanging out with my AEP friends in the school's art room after school (It was against the school rules, at least for me, as i was not in AEP, but, that ups the excitement quotient... haha....). We had water fights, clay fights, and many incidents of using school resources to watch vcds and hiding from surprise returns by teachers in charge. Also, i had the honour of having my body duplicated in the form of a plaster cast, for one my friend's O'Level art project..... hahaha.....

O'levels were unnerving, as all exams do, with me getting average grades and life moves on to the Junior College.........

To be continued...........
