The education system in Singapore is such that a Junior College (JC) is perceived by many as a superior choice over that of a Polytechnic, as Junior College or Pre-university was a surer choice for one to gain entrance into a local university. At that point of time in my life, my parents and I thought so too. Thus, after my Secondary school days, the obvious choice was to apply for a Junior College. (Today's situation is not exactly the same as some overseas universities are in the process of setting up a university here, mainly to cater for Polytechnic graduates) Sheer luck and a bit of hard work got me reasonably OK results for my O'levels and I applied and got into Temasek JC (A reasonably good JC).
Prior to the release of the O Level results, i was admitted to Nanyang JC (a neighbourhood JC), due to the rather low grades i obtained during my prelimary exams. Life there was good, really good and stressless. Everyday was fun, fun and more fun. Lessons were conducted on an extremely comfortable pace, so comfortable that not much work was required after school. One annoying thing was that i was denied the opportunity to take my desired subject combination, as according to one of the tutors there, my results were too bad and will definitely be not able to cope. (Thinking back, perhaps, she was right).
After a honeymoon phase of about 3 months, the official O level results were released and I got into Temasek JC (TJC). That was when all hell broke loose. The syllabus covered in my previous JC where I was attending lessons were totally out of pace. I was totally behind time. In fact the word LOST would have been more appropriate. It took me 6 whole months to catch up with what I had missed for the first three months. However, by then, I was already thrown way behind by my peers, as the pace was way too fast for my puny little mind. The next two years of my study was all mugging, mugging and more mugging everyday with no end in sight. And for all that, I got horrendous grades for my A'Levels and could have very little choice for my university studies.
During those horrendous 2 years, I was very glad to have friends around me. In fact, only 3 people whom I really considered as friends. The rest were mainly acquaintances and some people whom I never want to meet up ever again. Together, we form 1 girl, 3 guys and a pizza place. Innocent sarcasm was the way we communicated. We had little fun but a lot of work together. I'm glad we are still in contact today.
Many would claim that their college life is the best period of their school life. I, will have to disagree. In fact, it was the WORST time in my school life so far. It could be mainly be attributed to the fact that I was out of place and out of pace all the time. I never fitted into the whole feel of the school. Constant trouble with the ridiculous and sexually biased discipline master did not help either. (One example to illustrate, skip this if u can’t be bothered : How does "oh my god damn it shit" be classified as a vulgar 4 letter word? OK, damn and shit are four letters, but vulgar? I dunno. Comments appreciated…. By the way I had to report to him 1 hour earlier everyday for close to 3 months for uttering that statement).
Life after that went on a downward slope, as many would call, a slump..... that will be an article for reminiscing 3 look out for it.... Hahahah
