CoCo Lee's got a new full length studio album in english entitled "Exposed" and she means that literally. Click on link below to find out why. Sorry i don't know how to add images here yet.
http://www.sonymusic.com.tw/pop/coco/p6.phpR&B seems to be the new direction she is trying to venture in, after the not very successful conventional ballady approach of her 1st full length studio album in english (Just No Other Way). Although i liked that album pretty much, it did not seem to do much for her foray into the International Music Scene, despite OK sales in Asia, she was probably still rather unheard off anywhere else. In this album, she's adapted a new way of singing (initially i could not recognise her voice) . More moany, airy, floaty, smooth R&B-ish. (Don't think along the line of Mariah Carey and her Glitter album, NOT THAT moany!)
SEX SELLS!
We all know that and man, CoCo is utisiling that to the max. Some sample lyrics:
Track 5: So Good, Chorus "I feel your flow/ The vibe is so sexual/ Got me feeling like letting go/ Think i'm gonna ride you all night long/ 'Cause this feels so, so, so, good. (moan)/ So,so,so,good. (moan)
Track 7: Rock It : Chorus "Do you wanna rock it baby/ i wanna roll with you for sure/ i don't wanna stop this baby/ do what you want with me"
The sexy theme is further emphasised in the photos in the album sleeve cover and lyrics, which all seem to scream "Asian Temptress!!!!". Some are really rather poorly taken as in they seem to say more "hi i'm a prostitute" rather than "hi i'm an Asian pop star, hear me sing..." How sterotypical and how predictable. Oh CoCo aren't you seeming a little desperate to sell your cd?
Muscially wise, the effort is rather commendable. What should be there, is there, especially for a 1st R&B release. Also, every song is co-wrote by CoCo herself, though i would hope she could showcase more diversity by getting guest and well known songwriters to help make the album more palatable to the American audience. Another notable effort in making this album is that most of the additional background vocals are all done by herself (except those male voices rapping..... stating the obvious here. hahaha)
Lastly, Oh CoCo, dressing up is not shameful. Sexy not equals trampy. And beware of slipping into Mariah's moany doggy freaking style in Glitter, or Utada's senseless lyrics; another Asian pop star who recently made an effort to capture the American industry by doing also an R&B release cowrote all the lyrics, but terribly meaningless. Some sample lyrics, "You're Easy breezy and im japanesy/ soon you'll mean nothing to me/ does that mean anything to you?" All i can say is NO! i does not mean anything to me!!!!
Oh CoCo, here's wishing you success. Hopefully you will finally be able to have a successful breakthrough album. And all you skeptics out there, give this album a spin, you may be surprised.
